Andes Adventures

Runner on the "Chasqui Challenge 100 Mile Adventure Run & Stage Race" a yearly trail running event in Perú.

This is a 21.5 mile long day in the circuit that includes a climb up to Arapa pass at 15,585 feet and a descent to Laguna Pucacocha, followed by the Apacheta pass at 15,750 feet and a descent to Lake Ausangatecocha, followed by the Palomani pass at 16,600 feet and a descent toward Pampacancha at 14,900 feet, from where we continue to Uchuy Finaya on the south side of Mount Ausangate and run along the Jampamayo River valley ending with a short climb that brings us to Jampa, our camp at 15,500 feet.

Lunch is served upon arrival in camp including hot soup and another dish, accompanied by coca tea, the drink of choice in the Andes as well as a variety of other hot drinks. Boiled and treated water is always available in camp. Each runner receives a basin of hot water to bathe before getting into warm clothes. Later in the day we will all gather for "tea time" and finally dinner will be served at the end of the day.
