Join us for the farewell edition of our most demanding running adventure – a high mountain challenge ascending 10 passes over 15,000' in just 7 days!

Please note: This event will not be confirmed until we have at least 25 to 30 reservations. If you are interested, you should send your reservation! Because of the complex logistics of this adventure we do not plan to offer it after 2008.

TRIP FEE INCLUDES:

• Airport check-in and baggage assistance in Perú.

• All airport transfers as scheduled on itinerary.

• All ground transportation in comfortable private buses.

• All meals included: Buffet breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. Vegetarian meals can be accommodated (please request in advance).

• All sightseeing tours and park entrance fees to destinations on the itinerary.

• All off-trail accommodations in Perú are in fine hotels. When camping, we use roomy, high quality tents. All accommodations are based on double occupancy.

• If you are traveling alone and prefer single accommodations you must pay the single supplement. If you are willing to share accommodations and reserve at least 120 days in advance, we will try our best to find a roommate and if that is not possible you will pay only 75% of the single supplement cost. If we find a roommate, but your roommate cancels before departure, the 75% of the single supplement will apply.

• Inca Trail and Salkantay Trail: First-class camping and trekking services by experienced Andean guides, camp and cook staff, Huayruro porters on the Inca Trail and Quechua arrieros with their pack animals on the Salkantay Trail. Horses are available on the Salkantay Trail. All group camping equipment: quality tents, thermarest pads, dining and kitchen tents, tables and camp stools, toilet tents, etc. All meals: Wake up tea, breakfast, lunch, tea meal and dinner.

• All tips to porters, animal handlers and cooks. Andes Adventures pays their salaries and all their tips.

• The services of professional tour guides.

• Our local leaders and guides are knowledgeable about the language, customs, culture and history of their country. They are detail oriented and take great pleasure in sharing their insight and expertise. They help make sure everything runs as safely and smoothly as possible.

NOT INCLUDED:

• International airfare, internal flights, transfers for independent arrival or departure, travel insurance (highly recommended; additional information provided with your confirmation), passport fees, excess baggage fees, optional tips to trip leader, guides and local staff. All items of personal nature such as: sleeping bag, personal gear, laundry, telephone calls, beverages, etc.

Airfare is not included in the land cost of our trips. Andes Adventures can assist you with air ticketing or trip participants may make their own arrangements for air travel. Suggested flight routings and airlines will be provided. Please check with our staff before purchasing tickets. We need to verify your flight schedule and confirm that we have enough participants to guarantee the departure.

Day 1 Thursday — July 17: USA/Lima

Depart the USA on an afternoon flight to Lima where we will be met at the airport and transferred to a comfortable hotel for an overnight stay in the residential district of Miraflores.

Overnight at Sonesta Posada del Inca El Olivar.

Day 2 Friday — July 18: Lima/Huaraz

This morning we will board our private bus for an 8 hour drive to Huaraz. We head north along the Pan-American Highway crossing the desert coast, then turning inland and climbing through the Cordillera Negra or Black mountain range. We reach Conococha pass (13,385') before descending into Huaraz at 10,200 feet.

Today’s drive: 250 miles/405 km – about 8 hours on a comfortable bus.

Day 3 Saturday — July 19: Huaraz/Monterrey

Day at leisure in Huaraz and overnight in Monterrey.

Day 4 Sunday — July 20: Cashapampa/Jatuncocha

We travel north along the Callejón de Huaylas that is formed between the Cordillera Negra to the west and the Cordillera Blanca to the east and we'll enjoy views of peaks of both ranges, including Perú's highest peak Mount Huascarán (22,205'). On the way we will visit the Yungay memorial, where an avalanche released from Huascarán buried the town in 1970. Beyond Caraz we continue our drive on a climbing dirt road that brings us to the trailhead in Cashapampa at 9,500 feet. The trail follows a gradual climb through the narrow entrance of Quebrada Santa Cruz gorge, whose river forms exquisite cascades on its descent. We enjoy views of ice-capped peaks, Mount Absaraju (19,153'), Mount Caraz (19,750') and glimpses of the range ahead. We reach Laguna (Lake) Ichicocha at 12,450 feet and continue to our camp at Laguna Jatuncocha where we will see a variety of highland birds such as Andean geese, ducks and others.

Today’s drive: 54 miles/88 km – About 3 ½ hours

Day 5 Monday — July 21: Pucacuta

The trail continues uphill with views of Alpamayo (19,510'); considered to be the most beautiful mountain in the world. We reach Taullipampa at 13,780 feet, where we have an impressive view of Mount Taulliraju (19,127'); Rinrihirca (19,061'), Artesonraju (19,767') and Quitaraju (19,799').

We climb over Punta Union pass at 15,585 feet, the highest pass on our first circuit. From the top we have a panoramic view of Cordillera Blanca. We descend into the Huaripampa gorge and pass by alpine lakes before reaching Tucto at 13,600 feet. We run by queñual and quishuar forests; the only trees on earth growing at these altitudes followed by the ascent to Alto de Pucaraju pass at 15,260 feet and once again we will have spectacular views of the range. Our final descent today brings us to our camp in Pucacuta.

Day 6 Tuesday — July 22: Pucacuta/Vaqueria/Monterrey

We'll descend to Quishuar at 12,630 feet and continue up a gradual ascent to Yanagrahirca pass at 14,765 feet, followed by a descent into the valley of Chinguil then uphill to Colcabamba at 10,800 feet and finish in Vaqueria, where our bus is waiting to take us to Huaraz. We drive up to the Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass at (15,750') from where we'll have excellent views of Mount Huascarán (22,205'), Chopicalqui (20,846'), Huandoy (20,980') and Chacraraju (20,052'). We arrive in Monterrey where we rest and get ready for our exciting trip to Cordillera Huayhuash.

Day 7 Wednesday — July 23: Huaraz/Chiquian

Time to explore Monterrey & Huaraz. This afternoon we drive to Chiquian at 11,150 feet, the trailhead for our run in Cordillera Huayhuash. There is a spectacular view of Cordillera Huayhuash as you descend into Chiquian. You have the option to run the last 5 to 10 miles into town.

Today's run: Optional 10 miles (16 km) or shorter.
Today’s drive: 85 miles/134 km

Day 8 Thursday — July 24: Chiquian/Palca

We begin our run with a descent to Río Pativilca, follow Río Achin and continue uphill along the Río Llamac valley; passing by the village of Llamac at 10,500 feet, the picturesque village of Pocpa, arriving to our camp in Palca at approx. 12,700 feet.

Today's run: 19 miles (30.5 km).

Day 9 Friday — July 25: Carhuacocha

We continue our ascent across Quebrada Rondoy and enjoy the view of the glaciated peaks of Ninashanca (19,020') and Rondoy (19,280'), passing Cuartelhuain at 13,100 feet and begin the climb up to Cacananpunta pass at 15,400 feet. On our descent, we are treated to spectacular views of the ice-capped peaks of Rondoy (19,258'), Jirishanca (19,994') and Ninashanca. We descend to the valley below and reach our aid station in Janka at 13,470 feet before climbing up to the Carhuac pass at 15,200 feet from where we have views of the summit of Yerupajá (21,765') the second highest peak in Perú. Our final descent of the day brings us to our spectacular camp at Laguna Carhuacocha at 13,575 feet. The camp offers impressive views of the ice-peaks of Yerupajá (21,765'), Jirishanca (19,994') and Sarapo (20,100').

Today's run: 17 miles (27.5 km).

Day 10 Saturday — July 26: Huanacpatay

We ascend to Carnicero pass at 15,100 feet and descend to Laguna Atocshaico, passing the community of Huayhuash at 14,270 feet and Laguna Suerococha. We climb to Portachuelo de Huayhuash pass at 15,600 feet, from where we have views of Mounts Jurau (19,554'), Trapecio (18,583') and Carnicero (19,620') on the west and Cordillera Raura to the southeast. We descend to Laguna Viconga at 14,760 feet and continue past the dam, turning west and climbing up the steep trail to Punta Cuyoc pass at 16,400 feet, our highest pass. At the top we are treated to spectacular scenery, before descending to our camp in the upper Huanacpatay valley at approximately 14,200 feet.

Day 11 Sunday — July 27: Jahuacocha

This morning we continue along the Huanacpatay valley. We cross the junction of Río Huayllapa where the trail becomes steep, climbing 3,500 feet in 4.5 miles to Tapush pass at 15,750 feet. We descend to Laguna Susucocha and continue descending to Angocancha before climbing up to "Yaucha pass" at 15,900 feet. A long descent brings us to our camp at Laguna Jahuacocha at 13,285 feet. We have views of Rondoy, Yerupajá, Rasac, Jirishanca and other peaks.

Day 12 Monday — July 28: Jahuacocha

Today is a day to enjoy and explore the surroundings and rest. A hike to Laguna Solterococha will treat you to spectacular scenery. This afternoon we will enjoy a specially prepared traditional "pachamanca" dinner feast, prepared in an ancient Quechua method of cooking meat and vegetables underground with heated stones. Today is Peru’s Independence Day.

Day 13 Tuesday — July 29: Chiquian

We begin with a short descent into Rio Achin valley, passing a few houses and continuing up the trail along the water canal. A long descent takes us to the village of Llamac followed by the climb up to Chiquian.

Today's run: 22.5 miles (36 km).

Day 14 Wednesday — July 30: Chiquian/Lima

This morning we depart in our private bus to Lima.

You can fly out this evening or stay overnight in Lima. An overnight hotel room or a day use room is available. Those departing tonight transfer to the airport and depart on homeward-bound flights.

Day 15 Thursday — July 31: Lima/USA

Those departing this morning will be transferred to the airport.
